BOZEMAN, MT - For more than 60 years, Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) has faithfully groomed the recreation trails neighboring Bozeman Health’s Deaconess Regional Medical Center campus. Over the past 15 years, the two organizations have grown a partnership that is rooted in the shared purpose of healthy outdoor recreation and responsible land stewardship that shapes life in the Gallatin Valley.

BSF is proud to announce a meaningful new chapter in this relationship: Bozeman Health has made a legacy gift to Bridger Ski Foundation’s “Building the Base” campaign, supporting the creation of the nonprofit’s first-ever dedicated community headquarters. Construction is underway – renovating a commercial warehouse into a space that will welcome BSF’s staff members, 1,000 youth participants, and house their Community Winter Trails Program and wax room.

A long history of shared collaboration

Bozeman Health acquired 500 acres on the town’s eastern edge in 1956 with a vision centered on community health and quality of life. While 100 acres west of Highland Boulevard has since become home to essential medical and senior living services, the open space to the east is  serving another purpose: offering residents a year-round sanctuary for movement and connection.

In 2010, Bozeman Health partnered with BSF, Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT), and the City of Bozeman to formally establish public winter recreation access within 140 acres now lovingly known as Highland Glen. The community responded immediately – embracing trails with enthusiasm – demonstrating a growing demand for accessible, non-motorized recreation in town.

Both BSF and GVLT have poured tremendous energy into maintaining and enhancing this trail system. Today, Highland Glen is a cornerstone of the Main Street to the Mountains network. Every day, hundreds of skiers, hikers, and bikers use this cherished area. Recognizing its value, the 2024 Bozeman Health Subarea Plan formally designated Highland Glen as park and open space on the City’s future land-use map, securing its preservation for years to come.

“Some of the most powerful medicine doesn’t happen inside a hospital,” said Bozeman Health Chief Operating Officer Kallie Kujawa. “It happens on trails, in fresh air, and in spaces where people of all ages can move and connect. Our legacy gift to Bridger Ski Foundation reflects our belief that providing and enhancing access to outdoor recreation is foundational to the wellbeing of Gallatin Valley - today and for generations to come.”

The legacy gift from Bozeman Health will create lasting benefits for community health, outdoor access, and quality of life for the Gallatin Valley. For BSF, it also keeps the fundraising momentum moving along as they seek support from the community to finish the project and move into their new home. “We can’t wait to have this building full of kids, many of whom will be the next generation of trail stewards,” says BSF Executive Director Evan Weiss.
